A law in Recife was enacted requiring to new residential buildings with over 4 floors and with covered area over 400 square meters, to deploy green roofs.
Municipal Law 18,112 / 2015 was enacted in April and determines planting grass, vegetables, shrubs and small trees on the roofs of buildings. The law aims to increase the green areas of the city, and reduce the effects of heat. A green building roof may decrease it’s temperature up to six degrees. This measure can significantly reduce power consumption by reducing the use of air conditioners, for example.
The city also enacted Law No. 18,111 / 2015 to expand the green areas around parks and squares. The new projects for land, around 340 squares and parks of Recife, will have to hold a retreat two meters in front of buildings for afforestation.
