17 year old creates device that purifies water and generates clean energy

The Australian Cynthia Sin Nga Lam, is only 17 years old, and has developed a portable system that can purify water at the same time that generates energy. The idea, which led her to be one of the Google Science Fair finalists, promises to be a great outlet for communities that are isolated, by providing two basic needs at the same time and in a sustainable manner.

Made up of just two parts, the upper unit is used for power generation, while the bottom part serves to purify water, the invention was nicknamed H2prO. The device uses only titanium dioxide and light and has a 90% efficiency in the removal of organic pollutants from water in a process that can last up to two hours.
