There are basically two technological routes employed to achieve the energy use of waste: the direct flaring of waste (waste-to-energy) or combustion of the biogas produced from the decomposition of organic matter waste. There are about 1500 thermal plants world wide that burn waste to generate power or heat. The technology is expensive. The advantage is the processing of burned waste in about 12% of its original size in ashes.

In Brazil, energy use of waste has been possible by waste gas burning , also known as biogas. Simple burning methane, without any energy recovery, already provides an environmental benefit by transforming CH4 (methane) into CO2 (carbon dioxide).
